Could your SNO site use some spring cleaning?
We’re thinking spring! 🌸
Maybe it’s the slight uptick in temperature or the time change this past weekend, but we’re starting to think spring here at SNO. Warm sunshine, green grass, and of course, the obligatory spring cleaning and de-cluttering.
Whether you’re planning to do any personal spring cleaning or not (we won’t judge), here’s a list of six quick things you might want to tidy on your website.
- Old Users: We recommend this at the end of each school year, but check your list of users and, if there are any that should no longer have access to the site dashboard, make sure to edit their accounts and change their user role to “Subscriber.”
- Unnecessary Plugins: Notice any tabs on your site that are collecting dust? They might be unnecessary third-party plugins that someone installed at one point and never got around to removing. We put together this report a while back that includes a list of common unnecessary plugins as well as plugins you should keep installed, so be sure to double check before any cleanup work!
- Double Polls: Speaking of unnecessary plugins, some of you may see two different tabs related to polls – one labeled Polls and one labeled SNO Polls. You can keep both if you want, but we’d probably recommend getting rid of Polls to eliminate confusion. Simply click on the SNO Polls tab, click on the button that says “Import Legacy Poll Data,” and voila!
- Outdated Widgets or Menu Items: Double check your widgets and your menu items. If you see anything that hasn’t been updated in the last year or so, consider removing it to keep things fresh and current. Use this resource to learn more about editing widgets and this one to learn more about editing menus.
- Unpublished Story Drafts: When you click on the Stories tab in your dashboard, you should see some filtering options at the top (Published, Drafts, Trash, etc.). Unpublished drafts can end up sitting there for a long time. Consider moving any you don’t plan on publishing to trash.
- Cluttered Media Library: Similarly, it might not be a bad idea to do a quick audit of your site’s Media Library to check for duplicates, clean up photo dumps, etc. Just be sure not to delete any images that are being used somewhere on the site!
Still not ready to put away your cozy sweaters and mittens (or peel yourself off the couch) just yet? No worries – just make sure to bookmark this list for later!
